Fuses

If you still have a fuse-box fitted with re-wireable fuses, See number 1 or 2 below
CHANGE IT !  These fuses are commonplace and we are all familiar with them, however they are less safe, harder to reset and open to misuse. You may have heard stories of silver foil, nails, thick wire, etc being used in place of the correctly rated fuse wire.

If your consumer-unit has re-wireable fuses fitted, seek advice from a qualified electrician, and have each wire carrier checked to insure that it has the correct gauge of fuse wire fitted.

Consumer units have the task of not only protecting people from shock risk but also protecting the property from fire damage caused by overheating cables. Many people may postpone a complete rewire--But should, in the meantime replace their consumer unit with a more modern unit which will have easy to use,  MCB's fitted.

This would significantly raise the level of protection in the home.
I often recommend the installation of a split load consumer unit incorporating a RCD for added protection
