This fuse box is typically fitted with re-wireable fuses to BS 3035,(shown
above right). I almost always recommend the immediate replacement of
these fuses with the far superior cartridge type fuses
or MCB's
How
to improve the overall safety of the electrical installation in your
property
A
new consumer unit is safer and easier to operate. Paul Yates Electrical
usually fit miniature circuit breakers (MCB's) as they are cost-effective,
easy to use and do not need any spare fuses to be kept and fitted.
On the right is a close-up showing the label below the main switch.
Many good-quality fuse boxes fitted before 1985 are rated at 60 Amp's,
whilst the maximum load of all the circuits (fuses) is very often 100
Amps or greater. You could go and check yours .
Add up all the fuse ratings... Green=
45A, Red = 30A,
Yellow = 20A,
Blue = 15A, White=
5A
Many
homes will require the added protection of a
RCD
(Residual Current Device). These very sensitive circuit breakers offer a different kind of
protection from that provided by fuses and miniature circuit breakers (MCB's).
